Thanks American Pickers!

Are you a fan of American Pickers on the History Channel? ¬†I am and so are lots of the folks at Scott’s Liquid Gold. ¬†Fortunately for us, American Pickers are fans of Liquid Gold as well.¬†Over the weekend, I watched several repeat episodes back-to-back. One of my favorite episodes features a retired trucker that built an entire town on his property from buildings that were going to be destroyed, including a jail and a saloon. It was an amazing place! ¬†It is always fun to see what ¬†treasures they find and they meet the most interesting people.

I have another favorite episode from season one. It is episode 7 and on it Mike and Frank use Liquid Gold to clean up an old metal sign. ¬†We often hear people say, “Hey, they used this (Liquid Gold) on American Pickers”. ¬† We have had so many people tell us that we were mentioned on American Pickers that they must use Liquid Gold on lots of things; more than just wood and metal!

So, we wanted to say “thanks” for mentioning us to others. A few weeks ago, we sent Mike and Frank a few cans of Scott’s Liquid Gold, an original sample bottle and a replica of the garage where Liquid Gold began. ¬†After receiving our little care package, they sent us the autographed photo above. ¬†We were thrilled! ¬†Like I said, we have lots of fans under our roof and they just loved the picture. Thanks Mike and Frank! ¬†We will always be fans of American Pickers and we’re hoping that they will always be fans of Liquid Gold and that you will, too!

You Can Keep the Change

Growing up in Denver, Colorado, I have used Scott’s Liquid Gold my whole life. ¬†As a teen in the 70’s, one of my chores around the house was to dust the dining room furniture. My mother is the one that introduced me to Scott’s Liquid Gold. ¬†She used it on our ‘good’ furniture. ¬†It always made things look great, especially a large over-sized hutch that housed the ‘good’ dishes. It made everything in the dining room look so clean and shiny. ¬†I can still smell the original almond scent.

A French author in the 1600’s wrote, “The only thing constant in life is change.” ¬†Pretty astute for a guy from the 1600’s. ¬†But not all change is for the better. ¬†A one pound can of green beans now weighs 14.5 ounces. ¬†The average price for a movie ticket has gone from about $1.50 in 1970 to nearly $8.

Coming soon to a store near you – A NEW look for Scott’s Liquid Gold!

Fortunately Scott’s Liquid Gold has not really changed much in the last 40 years. The can looks a little different; cleaner, brighter and fresher. But like an old friend, it is one of the things I can count on in an ever-changing world.¬† I still use Liquid Gold to dust the dining room furniture and I have taught my daughter to do the same. ¬†It still leaves my furniture clean and shiny. ¬†It still has that warm, familiar¬†almond scent. ¬†I’m not sure people still do chores, dust a hutch or use the ‘good’ dishes but if they do I hope they are also using Scott’s Liquid Gold in their home. ¬†It’s tried and true and works just as well today as it did when I used to dust the hutch.

To Wax or Not to Wax

Would you light a candle and then spread the wax all over your dining room table? If you are using wax on your favorite natural wood furniture then that’s exactly what you are doing. Wax is more harmful to wood than it is beneficial. Anything made of natural wood needs to breathe. It also needs an occasional infusion of moisture to look it’s best and maintain the warm rich look. Putting wax on natural wood simply creates a surface barrier and prevents the wood from breathing. It does not allow moisture or natural oil to penetrate the surface. Wax can, in essence, smother the wood.

If you have a favorite piece that has been treated with wax and then use Scott’s Liquid Gold, the finish may begin to look cloudy and dull, as if the finish has been damaged. Actually, Liquid Gold is doing what it should. The natural solvents are eating away at the wax, trying to dissolve the wax build-up. If you want to remove wax build up, apply Liquid Gold and leave it on for some time. Buff out any remaining oil and do it again. It will take some time and several application but Scott’s Liquid Gold will remove the wax build up and bring back the warm rich glow of healthy natural wood.

The best way to care for natural wood is to dust regularly and treat it with oil like Scott’s Liquid Gold once a month or as needed to keep it from drying out. The time between applications of Liquid Gold varies based on where you live. If you live in a drier climate, you need to treat your wooden treasures more often. Using a product like Scott’s Liquid Gold cleans, moisturizes¬†and protects all the natural wood in your home or office. It allows the wood to breathe while providing the needed moisturize. It protects the wood, naturally.

Natural wood does not like wax but it loves Scott’s Liquid Gold!

Wood and the Elements

Did you know that wood is ALIVE?!? Wood is living, not breathing necessarily but it’s organic and the elements can very easily damage it. How you might ask? Water, sunlight and lack of moisture; yes wood is rather delicate and should be treated with care.

First off, water. It’s wood’s natural (and worst) enemy! Wood contains cells that absorb water, which can cause it to warp and its finish to crack. Furthermore, the adhesives can loosen and become a host for fungi that cause dry rot! Secondly, sunlight and lack of moisture both of these enemies cause wood cells to lose moisture and collapse. When those cells collapse it causes splintering, shrinking, color fading, splitting, and bubbling (yes, wood can bubble)!

Luckily, for all these elemental enemies there‚Äôs Liquid Gold to help wood ‚Äúfight‚ÄĚ back! You can use it to maintain wood‚Äôs moisture balance, and restore and preserve its beauty. It really is ‚ÄúLiquid Gold‚ÄĚ.
