Real Wood + Greenery for the Best Holiday Look of the Season

rustic-holiday-decor-collageHave you started decorating for the winter holidays yet? As soon as Thanksgiving was over, we began decorating the Scott’s Liquid Gold office for Christmas. This year, popular holiday décor is overwhelmingly natural, rustic, neutral, and understated. Images and design ideas trending right now highlight natural and botanical elements rather than plastic or manufactured-looking elements. This trend is great for the budget and easy to achieve because many items you can use may even be found in your very own backyard! We are excited to share with you how to create this look in your home and how Scott’s Liquid Gold can help.

To begin, find some real wood. Flea markets and thrift stores are great for finding old wooden trays, planter boxes, barn wood, pallet wood or crates. With a little Liquid Gold, they make beautiful clean slates for your creative attention! Barn wood and pallet wood can make great holiday signs or stocking holders. Crates, trays, and planter boxes can be the start to a lovely tablescape or the festive filling of an empty corner or coffee table.

Once you have your wood, go on a treasure hunt in your backyard for branch cuttings, pine cones, and rosemary, spruce, or evergreen sprigs. If your backyard doesn’t yield enough to work with, try Walmart, craft stores, or garden stores. You can easily find fake or real greenery, wood slices, burlap, and pillar candles.  These elements can easily be put together in many different ways to create charming holiday looks – it’s so easy they can almost be thrown together! christmas-botanical-decorationsslg-plus-decor-2_1
Beyond the decorations, holiday gift wrap can follow the same trend. Pinterest is full of inspiration for beautiful simple gift of brown kraft paper with natural elements such as greenery and twine. Again – great for the budget and less work for you!

Creativity, thriftiness, and a little Scott’s Liquid Gold blend perfectly together for a charming and beautiful holiday look. Happy decorating!

Flooded with Memories

Rushing water of the South Platte River in 1965

Rushing water of the South Platte River in 1965

For two days in June of 1965, torrential rains caused historic flooding of the Platte River in Denver.  Scott’s Liquid Gold was a tiny company based just blocks from the swollen South Platte River.

Years earlier in 1951, Ida Goldstein had purchased the formula and remaining inventory of Scott’s Liquid Gold from a door-to-door salesman.  Ida was a widow with three sons and had weathered the great depression alone. By 1965, Ida’s oldest son, Jerry, had taken on the task of building Scott’s Liquid Gold into a business.

On June 16, 1965, Jerry watched the Platte River rise and feared that Liquid Gold and years of work would be wiped out.  It took several days for the water to recede and for local business owners to be allowed back into the flood ravaged area.  It took several more days just to get the door open to assess the damage. Jerry expected to find that everything had been washed away or broken beyond repair.  To his surprise, although severely battered and bruised, most of the bottles and equipment were intact.

Without insurance, the clean-up began. Jerry realized that as the flood waters rose, the bottles simply floated. As the water receded the bottles settled again on the dirt and mud left behind by the rushing water.

With the help of his family and friends, they cleaned and sorted bottles and put the small manufacturing facility back together.  Within weeks Jerry was batching and bottling by hand and filling orders just as he had before the flood.

To encourage Jerry as he was building the company, Ida had given him a framed poem called “Don’t Quit”. Her years as a single mother during the depression had made her tenacious and she never gave up and she expected the same from her sons. The poem hung on the wall of a tiny office in the small manufacturing facility.  When Jerry first opened the door to the plant a few days following the flood the first thing he found was the poem. Like the bottles, it simply rose and fell with the flood waters.

Scott’s Liquid Gold survived the flood of 1965 and has gone on to thrive for another 50 years.  It is one of the most well-known and trusted brands in America today.  Jerry’s only son, Mark, worked with his dad for 22 years and has led the company since his father’s death in 2000.  Jerry always believed that the poem survived as a reminder to never give up on your dreams and keep going because you never know how close you are to seeing your dreams come true.  To the millions of Americans with big dreams and high hopes, we want to encourage you to keep going.  Success may be closer than you think.

From the poem “Don’t Quit”-

Success is failure turned inside out –

The silver tint of the clouds of doubt.

And you can never tell how close you are

It may be near when it seems afar;

So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit –

It’s when things seem worst that you musn’t quit.

Through the eyes of a window

There was an old window, this window lived in Granby, Colorado.Through the eyes of a windowFor 30 years Window enjoyed sunshine and mountain views by day and billions of twinkling lights among the dark sky at night.  One sunny morning Window was suddenly stripped of the life he knew. He was thrown in the back of a truck and headed to Denver, Colorado. In Denver, Window was on the brink of death, ready to be tossed in a giant brown metal container when suddenly a soft voice struck Window.

“Excuse me, what are doing with that window?” the soft voice asks.

“Why I’m throwing this old thing away” a deep and raspy voice responds.

“Is it broken?”

“No, I just installed new windows for a fella in Granby. These here were custom built in the 80’s.”

“Well let me take those off your hands, I can give him a new life.”

Found an old window

…And Window’s new life journey began.

Breadbox Gets an Updo

Breadbox Before   Breadbox_afterThrift Store: Goodwill  in Lafayette , CO.  Did you know Goodwill Industries “diverts more than two billion pounds of clothing and household goods every year from landfills by recovering the value in people’s unwanted material goods.” That’s pretty impressive.

Breadbox appearance: decent condition, didn’t need much work.

Reality of the box condition: highly built up gunk, hardware was very worn, wood itself dry and dull, missing the center piece.

First I had to use Scott’s Liquid Gold Cleaner & Preservative to restore the wood. This wood was highly receptive to Liquid Gold, it was a hard wood that has been around for a very long time. This also removed all the gunk the breadbox had acquired. Inside the bread box

Gunk noun: unpleasant sticky or messy substance that can be removed using Liquid Gold.

The Updo

Light sanding on the front in preparation for paint. A new and fun knob found at Hobby Lobby. Spray painted the hinges copper to add a shimmer. Very fancy scrapbook paper & cardboard were used to fill in the center open space for the final touch.

Breadbox is prepared for it’s date with Bread!

Non-Toxic Wood Wash Concentrate

Scott’s Liquid Gold Wood Wash Concentrate was designed to be a non-toxic hardwood floor cleaner. We wanted it to be safe for the floors our kids and pets play on while thoroughly cleaning the beautiful wood in our home.  However, after trials and testing we realized it is a fantastic (and safe) multi-purpose cleaner. It works well on not only wood and simulated wood but on tile, linoleum, porcelain, vinyl, chrome, brass, leather, misc. painted surfaces and fiberglass.Wood Wash Concentrate

Wood Wash Concentrate comes in a 25 fl. oz. bottle.

Directions: Mix 1/4 cup of Wood Wash with 1 gallon of warm water! It’s best use is for larger surfaces as it is mixed with an entire gallon of water! There’s a lot of cleaning we can do with this. Following these directions you will get a little over 12 “cleanings” from the bottle.

Wood Wash ConcentrateWhere does the “non-toxic” come from? Drum roll please…. Citric Acid aka grapefruit, oranges, and all citrus fruits. Citric Acid is the main ingredient for both Scott’s Liquid Gold Wood Wash Concentrate and Ready-to-Use spray. Non-toxic and biodegradable go hand in hand when it comes to Wood Wash, after cleaning – it is safe to dump the bucket in the yard.

Using Wood Wash on my leather couch is my new cleaning secret! Wood Wash is also perfect for cutting boards – this is a better choice than a bleach or potent disinfectant. It will clean and purify the cutting board without leaving behind the harmful chemicals for you to ingest.Wood Wash Concentrate

No matter how and where you’re using Wood Wash it’s important to always follow the mixing directions! Additionally, Concentrate is not to be used as a refill for Ready-to-Use spray. This is because the two products have different formulas. Ready-to-Use is also a safe and non-toxic cleaner but it was not designed for floors and should not be combined with the Concentrate formula.

Wood Wash Concentrate can currently be found at most Ace hardware, Menards, Kmart, and Sears stores across the nation. Of course, it’s available online as well!

Recreating French Vintage

Hello fellow country vintage lovers! I’m here today to share some wonderful resources and ideas for recreating a French, country, and vintage piece for your home. Read

First, find something old, ugly or boring to work with! I came across this hideous magazine rack with a leopard print-like design at Goodwill, immediately knowing it was the perfect piece.

See hideous!Magazine Holder

After much sanding, it was still very “spotted” I chose a dark stain to re-stain two areas on the rack that I had intentions for a reverse stencil (find great instructions here). I didn’t want the spotting coming through but rather a nice, clean dark wood. This worked out well, the wood took to the stain great!

R-purposed

Placing vinyl letters “READ” over the newly stained spots (I gave the stain 2-3hrs before placing vinyl letters and it needed more time but still worked for me), I then sprayed the rest with an off white spray paint.Read

Notice here – there’s nothing vintage about it, I wasn’t pleased. It looks nice and could have stayed as is. But I wanted vintage! This is when I found It’s Just Me Blog and followed her amazing guidelines for re-creating a French vintage appeal rather easily.

I created the rustic look (localized sanding and sporadic hammer marks) before creating the vintage “print” idea found on the blog. I would suggest doing this the other way around. If you make a mistake while doing the “print” it will be much easier to cover during the “create rustic” process.

Read

I also chose to create the French appeal in two locations, both being fairly small. I wouldn’t recommend this technique of “French vintage print” on anything smaller than this project here, the technique is amazing but indeed somewhat tedious with the smaller writings and lines.

French Vintage

I chose to make the finished product a place for books rather than magazines. I love how the vintage and rustic turned out as well as the French lettering! The description on It’s Just Me Blog is fabulous and easy to follow. When you’re first reading through – it may sound lengthy but it’s quite simple once you get started.

Don’t forget the Liquid Gold once your project is complete and fully dry! Liquid Gold will ensure the preservative of your beautiful masterpiece!
